Welcome to the December 2010 Instrument Systems Update. Here we bring you news of a range of our recent projects.
Weather is a critical factor for any rowing event. Over the eight-day World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro, NIWA provided web-based minute-by-minute wind and weather information, and forecasts of lake surface conditions.
NIWA has completed the first phase of its national Snow and Ice Monitoring Network (SIN). The network now comprises 11 high-altitude meteorological stations located strategically along the length of the South Island’s Southern Alps.
High-altitude environmental monitoring stations are often in very exposed places, putting them at risk from lightning strike. Lightning strikes can damage equipment and cause data loss. At Rose Ridge, 2000 m above sea level in Mt Cook National Park, we have installed a lightning protection system with our monitoring station.
The 2010 irrigation season has begun and NIWA is commissioning a new demand-driven irrigation control system. The system enables irrigators to order water online from Canterbury’s newest irrigation scheme.
